Government Polytechnic College, Nagercoil is one of the two polytechnics founded in 1959 under the second five year plan. It was initially functioning in the S.T. Hindu College Premises with 120 students. At that time, we had three branches civil Engineering mechanical engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Then, it was shifted to the present campus spreading over 20 hectares in September 1963. The technical High school was then part of our institution till the year 1986.

At present, the curriculam has blossomed into five diploma courses namely Civil, Mechanical, Electrical & Electronics and Electronics and Communication and computer Engineering, with an intake of 60 students in each branch together with 20 per cent of students through lateral entry. Besides, we have been offering part time diploma courses since the academic year 1978-79. The students in full time education have accured into 858 while those in part-time education have accumulated into 227.

Part Time Courses – Eligibility

A pass in SSLC Examination (or) Equivalent /. SSLC + ITI /SSLC+ Experience / SS LC + ITI Experience.

Note: Weightage of Marks will be given for the service period inthe relevant Engineering field.

Candidates should have been employed within a distance of 90 Km., from the Institution to which applicant seeks admission within Tamil Nadu.

MODE OF SELECTION – Part Time Courses

• The marks secured in X Standard qualifying examination shall b e reduced to a base of 80 Marks;
• Weightage be given for every completed year of service after passing the qualification with a maximum of 20 marks in the following manner. (a) For every completed year ‑ 4 Marks. Selection shall be made as per ranking based on the total Marks secured in items (i) and (ii) above (80 + 20 = 100) (Subject to reservation as per Government orders).
• Minimum of two years full time work experience in a registered Firm / Company / Industry / Educational and/ Government Autonomous Organizations on the relevant field on which admission is sought. [OR]

Passed 10th Std. and 2 years I.T.I. after 10th Std. Examination. [OR]

Year of Starting The Courses

Railway Concession

The students of the polytechnic are eligible for concession on the Southern Railway from their residence to the polytechnic and vice versa. Student desirous of getting such concession shall apply in the prescribed form for getting the certificate atleast two days in advance.

Hostel Facilities

The College has separate hostel for boys and girls. Principal is the warden of the hostel and the Deputy Warden helps the warden in all aspects. There is a Residential Tutor who helps the Deputy Warden and supervises the students and monitors the discipline in the hostel.
